Former Prime Minister and current PL MEP Alfred Sant has spoken out against any possible Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) agreement with the United States of America, saying that he cannot agree with any such agreement.
"Through a SOFA, USA military personnel in Malta would, no matter what they do, not be able to be taken before our courts to respond to crimes they may commit. They might be taken back to the USA to respond there for their actions, according to USA law. Maybe."
"Personally I cannot agree with an agreement like this. I always had a soft spot for the USA and will still do, but I have a bigger soft spot for Malta's sovereignty and independence, and for its neutrality."
