The traditional Republic Day ceremony is currently taking place in Valletta, with the President of Malta George Vella giving a speech and presenting the country’s most prestigious awards later this morning.
December 13th commemorates the day in 1974 when Malta’s constitution was revised, changing Malta from being a Commonwealth realm with the Queen of Britain as its head of state to a republic.
Sir Anthony Mamo became the first President of Malta. Current incumbent George Vella is the 10th person to hold this post since.
To mark the occasion, the Armed Forces of Malta and band have embarked on a parade from Parliament down Republic Street to St. George’s Square – which is where the ceremonial parade takes place.
Afterwards, a ceremony will take place in the Grand Council Hall in the Grandmaster’s Palace in Valletta, where the President will present the year’s honours.
Due to Covid-19 regulations, only those with invitiations in hand are permitted at St. George’s Square.
