Parliamentary Secretary for Equality Rosianne Cutajar and one of her political aides allegedly received around €50,000 each for the sale of a €3.1 million Mdina property to Yorgen Fenech, MaltaToday reports. The sum they received was reportedly a brokers' fee. The Times of Malta also ran the story.
The newspaper report read that the property sale was carried out by a fiduciary firm run by the husband of Judge Abigail Lofaro, who sits on the board of the public inquiry into the assassination of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.
The MaltaToday report reads that Cutajar visited the property with Yorgen Fenech when Cutajar was still just an MP and that a man named Charles Farrugia, who became her political aide last February after she had been appointed Parliamentary Secretary, was also with them. The report read that Cutajar and Farrugia claimed finder's fees of around €50,000 each.
The promise of sale was signed between Fenech and Judge Lofaro's husband in May 2019, but Maltatoday reports that no brokers' fees were registered on it. The report reads that the property owner had paid €100,000 of the deposit paid as a brokerage fee to Cutajar and her aide. The contract did not end up being signed as Fenech was arrested in November 2019 and the owner of the property ended up chasing Cutajar and her aide over the brokerage fee.
Cutajar's FB post
In a Facebook post, Cutajar said that the newspapers allege that there is someone who "is asking for money back on an alleged senserija at a time when I was not a Parlimanetary Secretary. They did not show, however, a legal letter her lawyer sent to the person who allegedly made the request for repayment of the funds," which she said states that she has nothing to do with this request and if there are those asking for something back, they need to make that request to whoever it concerns"
She said that till today there are no court proceedings on the alleged request, "as usually happens when someone believes they have a right to something."
"I am convinced that I always acted correctly, legally, ethically and I am ready to defend my name wherever and whenever necessary."
