Ian Deguara appointed as new Data Protection Commissioner

Ian Deguara has been appointed as the new Commissioner for Information and Data Protection, the Ministry of Justice, Equality and Governance announced on Monday. 

Deguara holds a degree in Computer Science and Administration from the University of Malta. He was one of the first employees to form the Office for Information and Data Protection when it was set up in 2002. 

The ministry said that during his years of service in this office, Deguara has held various roles and formed part of the national task force for the implementation of the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) in accordance with the rules of the European Commission. 

Since January 2020, Deguara has served as Deputy Commissioner. 

Minister for Justice, Equality and Governance Edward Zammit Lewis congratulated Deguara on his appointment and wished him every success in this post for the years to come. 

Zammit Lewis also thanked the former Commissioner Savior Cachia, for his service to the Maltese state over the years.
