Follow the rules or we’ll meet at the emergency department – A&E head

The head of Mater Dei’s Emergency Department has warned people to follow health guidelines, warning that if they do not, they might get to meet him at the A&E ward in 15 days’ time.

Michael Spiteri was reacting to several photos on social media showing long queues at the Cirkewwa terminal.

The Malta Independent had reported that most of Gozo’s rental accommodation is fully booked for the New Year’s weekend, raising concerns that this could lead to a spike in Covid-19 infections. The health authorities have repeatedly warned against the unnecessary mixing of different households.  

Despite these warnings, however, there was standstill traffic on Wednesday on the road leading to the Gozo ferry terminal.

In a Facebook post, Spiteri said he hoped that common sense would prevail.

“Judging from the queues for the Gozo ferry, I am not being very optimistic but I remain hopeful. Large gatherings from outside your household remain extremely risky but I believe that the vast majority of Maltese got the message and will exercise ample caution and follow Public Health guidelines.”

“If this is not the case, we shall meet at the Emergency department around the 15th of January,” he warned.
