Home collapse victim’s husband fears tragedy will be swept under the carpet

Saturday, 2 January 2021, 14:06 Last update: about 4 years ago

The husband of a woman who died when her house collapsed earlier this year said he fears that the tragedy will be “swept under the carpet.”

In a Facebook post, Carmelo Pace, whose wife Miriam died in the Hamrun collapse on 2 March, said, “many people want this tragedy to be forgotten.”

The collapse was caused by construction works next door. Four people have been charged over her death. The case is ongoing.

Pace wrote that he started the New Year by visiting his late wife’s grave to spend some time talking to her.

The country lit up with anger when the tragedy occurred ten months ago, he said, but that fire was now dying down, “because it seems that many want this incident to be forgotten and swept under the carpet.”

He asked why no one has been told what the findings of a report drawn up by government experts are. “Why are the authorities refusing to launch a public inquiry to see if there are institutional shortcomings in the construction sector, which can avoid further deaths?”

Carmelo Pace said many had agreed with him ten months ago when he had hoped that Miriam’s death would at least lead to change so that the household becomes a safe shelter for citizens. “But what about now?”
