The former president of the Malta Football Association, Joe Mifsud, allegedly sought nearly €1 million in cash for advice on an ice-hockey world championship, documents published by German media show.

German newspaper Suddeutsche Zeitung and magazine Der Spiegel report that the request for payment of one million Swiss francs (€926,000) was made in 1998.

At the time, Mifsud was MFA president and a member of the executive body of FIFA.

An invoice seen by the German media states that the services stem from a contract dated 19 November, 1997, with the amount due in cash the following August.

Contacted by Times of Malta, Mifsud declined to comment, while MaltaToday quotes him as denying having any link to any ice hockey championship.

In a request for comment, Mifsud told MaltaToday he “never had anything to do in any manner whatsoever” with ice hockey tournaments, either as an individual or a lawyer. “Any statement or document claiming otherwise is totally false.”

In 2007, foreign media had reported that money paid to the MFA for an exhibition match between Malta and German club Bayern Munich had not been routed to the MFA.

Mifsud has always denied the accusation and any link between the friendly and his support to Germany’s bid to host the World Cup in 2006.
