The PN’s Covid-19 Action team has said that the Prime Minister should refrain from giving unrealistic deadlines when it comes to the vaccination of the country.

It comes as the action team, headed by Leader of the Opposition Bernard Grech, met with the Medical Association of Malta (MAM) where the country’s vaccination programme was discussed.

In a comment given by Health Minister Chris Fearne, he said that herd immunity in Malta would be achieved by the end of summer. This goes against multiple statements which Prime Minister Robert Abela has given in the past were he states that by May, everything will be back to ‘business as usual’, the PN noted.

In order for this to be achievable, the rate of vaccination has to improve drastically, they said. Currently, “50 vaccinations are being given every day and in order to achieve herd immunity by May, more than 5,000 vaccines have to be given every day”, the Covid-19 Action Team stated.

The PN went on to enforce the importance of a more efficient vaccination process in Malta. “The useless deadlines given by Abela are only confusing the general public on their health”, the PN stated. These statements come after the infamous second wave comment by Abela, which according to the PN showed that our Prime Minister has learnt nothing throughout the previous year.

The PN concluded that in order for the public health sector to improve the vaccination program, mature politicians are needed in order to take the right decisions which are based on facts rather than unrealistic deadlines.
