Planning Commission rejects proposal to turn valley villas into hotel

Friday, 22 January 2021, 14:12 Last update: about 4 years ago

A recommendation to approve the conversion of two villas in Wied Ghomor into a hotel was rejected by the Planning Commission.

The commission argued that it would run counter to ODZ policies.

The Planning Directorate had previously recommended that the proposal be approved. Previously, the buildings in question were reportedly illegally being used as a guesthouse. The two villas currently on site were approved in 2017 and 2018.

The representatives of the St Julian's and Swieqi local councils argued that the change of use to a commercial one of this site is prohibited at law.

St Julian's mayor Albert Buttigieg also argued that the project would further commercialise the locality, and spoke of the impact such a project would have on the valley. The Commission took note of ERA's objection to the proposal and decided that the project does not conform with PA policies.
