WATCH: Chris Fearne, Stephen Spiteri receive Covid-19 vaccine

Tuesday, 26 January 2021, 09:53 Last update: about 4 years ago

Health Minister Chris Fearne and Opposition spokesperson for health Stephen Spiteri are next in line to receive the Covid-19 vaccine.

The vaccination campaign kicked off almost a month ago, on 27 December last year.  Healthcare workers were first in line for the jab, while it soon opened for citizens who are over the age of 85 as well.

After receiving the vaccine, Fearne said that across the span of time, science has always been the thing that has beaten illness - not superstition.

He said that despite problems in the European Union with the distribution of the vaccine, the roll-out is going as planned in Malta.  He said that pharmacists will start to receive the vaccine as from tomorrow, and that this week all citizens over the age of 80 will be receiving their letter of appointment to get vaccinated as well, with the first of these appointments being in the first week of February.

Fearne appealed for the public to get vaccinated and to remain responsible, even if they have been vaccinated already, by continuing to wash their hands and to stay at home if they are not feeling well.

Spiteri meanwhile also emphasised the importance of getting vaccinated, and urged people to take the chance when it comes to them.

He said that it seems like the majority of the public is accepting the vaccine, and noted that him and Fearne taking the vaccine serves to prove their belief in it.

He noted that it is important for everyone to follow the health measures which are in place until herd immunity is achieved so that as many people as possible can be kept safe and so that the pandemic is not spread further.

Spiteri added his hope that the country continues vaccinating people at the current rhythm and in fact increases it, which he said seems will be the case.

A number of high-profile figures have received the vaccine, including the President of Malta George Vella and the Superintendent of Public Health Charmaine Gauci.

Malta, as of Sunday, had administered 19,981 doses of the vaccine.  1,198 people have received both doses of the vaccine.
