Minister Camilleri pointed out that the reason the total of reason varies from 604 is because there are a number of prisoners with more than one offense.

The information reveals that out of the 604 prisoners stated, 151 prisoners are serving a prison sentence for aggravated theft, 138 prisoners are serving for conversion of fines and another 135 are in prison for possession of false documents.

In addition, 43 prisoners are serving a prison sentence due to possession and trafficking of drugs, 37 were found guilty of transfer of passports, 30 prisoners are serving for conspiracy with other persons in drug trafficking, whilst another 30 were found guilty and serving a sentence for falsification of fraud.

The report further shows a total of 12 prisoners are serving a sentence in prison related to domestic violence including attempted homicide, harassment, slight injuries and wilful homicide.

With regards to rape offences, 12 prisoners are serving for rape and raping minors.
