Farrugia Portelli said that, thanks to increased awareness, the CRPD has received an larger number of requests to investigate irregularities and abuse.

Pace Gasan said the commission is working to eliminate all forms of direct and indirect social discrimination against disabled persons and their relatives, while also giving them the support they need.

The CRPD is currently strengthening its enforcement section to be able to act as a better regulator and ensure that the rights of persons with a disability are safeguarded. At the same time, it will have greater power to fine those who do not abide by the laws.

She spoke about the need for disabled persons to be involved in decision-making processes.

She added that 60% of employees at the commission are people with a disability.

Prime Minister Abela also spoke about the importance for state entities, departments and agencies to set an example when it comes to accessibility.

The government is doing this through “concrete facts,” he said, adding that more will be done so that no one feels left behind or is denied their basic rights.
