Car park of 400 parking spaces in Qawra ‘not being used’

A car park for around 400 parking spaces is not being used and no due reason as to why is being given, residents in the area told The Malta Independent.

This was confirmed by PN councillor for St Paul’s Bay and PN general election candidate on the 12th district Graziella Galea, who said that while so much space is being wasted, residents are being given parking tickets.

Qawra is notorious for parking difficulties that the residents face. The car park is closed off for parking in the after-work hours.

“While residents are given parking tickets, the authorities have a vacant and lit car park, which the residents are not allowed to use,” Galea pointed out in a Facebook post.

Speaking to The Malta Independent, Galea said that they are leaving lights on at night, with the gate closed and leaving it completely empty.

“An agreement needs to be reached between all entities. When the school was being proposed, we had pointed out that there needs to be parking for residents as well along with the plan,” she said.

Galea did point out that the discussions need to be held with the Education Ministry on this, as it falls under their remit. “The school falls under the ministry, so a discussion needs to be held with them in order to sort this out.”

“A lot of flats have been built in recent years, so of course, a parking problem was going to be created. Not everyone can afford a garage – the problem of parking is immense.”

Questions sent to the local council have remained unanswered.
