The European People's Party (EPP) Group has called for a debate to be held in the European Parliament over the revelations relating to the murder of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.

The debate the EPP wants would include a resolution and would be held in the presence of EU Commissioner for Justice Didier Reynders.

“We call for a debate in the European Parliament Plenary with a resolution and demand that EU Commissioner for Justice Didier Reynders comes to the EP plenary to address the serious questions raised by new revelations in the Daphne Caruana Galizia case, implicating highest levels of Maltese Labour Government.”

“The EPP Group is concerned the government will continue to obstruct the path to justice for Daphne Caruana Galizia. Parliament should therefore unanimously call on the EU Commission to remain vigilant. We will never accept that journalists are murdered with impunity in Europe.”

This call comes in the wake of new revelations made through the testimony of Vince Muscat, who pleaded guilty to his part in her murder, and has begun testifying for the prosecution against the other suspects.

“The implication of those at the highest levels of government in Daphne Caruana Galizia's assassination is shocking and unprecedented. The European Parliament should be unanimous in its condemnation and concern. We expect the Commission to maintain pressure on Maltese authorities to end impunity,” the EPP said.
