Over 85% of primary students returned to their classrooms when schools reopened on Monday, the Education Ministry said.

All educational institutes were closed down in March amid a spike in Covid-19 cases, but they are gradually opening this week, after infection numbers were brought down.

Primary schools, as well as childcare centres and kindergartens opened on Monday.

Middle schools are set to open on Wednesday while secondary schools will do so on Friday. Tertiary education will continue to be given online.

Attendance on Monday was 85.5% the ministry said.

Education Minister Justyne Caruana welcomed the news, saying that education is best provided at school.

Total attendance among kindergarten, primary, middle and secondary schools was 80%

The ministry reminded that upwards of 50 Covid-19 measures are in place across schools.

Caruana said that maintenance work was carried out at various schools during the closure. This included painting and the reorganisation of open spaces. She thanked all teachers and school workers, as well as students and parents for their cooperation.
