A 19-year-old man has died in a traffic accident in Rabat, while a passenger of the same age has also been seriously injured.

The accident happened at around 11am on Sunday in Triq tal-Infetti in Rabat.

TVM have named the victim - he is Julian Spiteri.

A police statement said that preliminary investigations showed that a 19-year-old man from Attard lost control of his Volkswagen Bora and crashed into a tree as a result. Another 19-year-old, also from Attard, was in the passenger seat at the time.

The driver unfortunately passed away in the accident on site, while the passenger suffered grievous injuries and was rushed to Mater Dei Hospital by ambulance.

Duty magistrate Nadine Lia is leading a magisterial inquiry, while police investigations are ongoing.
