A number of new services for victims of criminality were announced on Thursday at the launch of the Victim Support Agency.

These include a care plan, legal services by lawyers and professionals who accompany victims during court hearings, a follow-up on the current situation regarding aggressors, and preparing victims for all eventualities regarding their case.

The measures were announced by Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri and Victim Support Agency Chairperson Brian Farrugia.

Camilleri said the new agency will ensure that victims are given the care and support they need. It will also encourage victims to speak up, and this lead to prevention of similar crimes.

The launch of the VSA builds on the work carried out since 2015, when new government services were introduced, and the Police Victim Support Unit was set up.

The agency will offer more support to crime victims by linking all existing services, the minister said.

VSA chairperson Brian Farrugia said the agency’s role is to understand, listen to, assist, and support all victims of criminality.

Since 2019, one out of every four victim reported cases of harassment. Many people are hesitant to report crimes, he said.

He appealed to the public to report crimes carried out against them. Reports can be made via via email: [email protected] or by calling 25689700.
