Repubblika asks police to investigate Carmelo Abela over advertising ethics breach report

Thursday, 6 May 2021, 10:14 Last update: about 4 years ago

NGO Repubblika has asked the police to investigate Minister within the Office of the Prime Minister Carmelo Abela, over the Standards' Commissioner's findings regarding an advert that appeared in the local media.

A report published by Standards Commissioner George Hyzler found that Abela had breached ethics with the publication of a newspaper advert using public funds, saying that the advert was intended to boost his image, rather than provide information of value to the public.

Speaker Anglu Farrugia abstained after a split vote between government and opposition members of the Standards Committee regarding the report, meaning that the report was not adopted.

Repubblika has now sent a letter to Police Commissioner Angelo Gafa containing the report "with the aim for the police to proceed with an investigation."
