Destiny finishes 7th in Eurovision as Italy emerges victorious

A disappointing televoting result led to Destiny finishing in 7th place in the Eurovision Song Contest Final.

Destiny, with her song Je me casse, had started out the competition as one of the hot favourites to win, but a scintillatingly strong performance was not enough to translate the odds into reality, as she ended in a comparatively disappointing 7th place.

Malta placed 3rd at the end of the jury vote with 208 points. Switzerland placed first with 267 votes, while France was second with 248. Malta received 12 points from Norway, Sweden, Australia and Romania.

France, Serbia and the UK were the only countries not to give Malta any points.

A haul of just 47 points from the televoting process meant that she could not keep pace with the frontrunners.

It’s the third Eurovision in a row where Malta’s entry has performed strongly in the jury vote, only to be stopped in its tracks by the televote.

Michela only got 20 points from televoting compared to 107 from the jury in 2019, while Ira Losco’s hit Walk on Water placed 4th in jury vote before receiving just 16 points in the televote to drop her to 12th place overall.

Bookies favourites Italy ended up the victors, becoming the first group to win since 2006.  It’s the first time Italy won the Eurovision song contest since 1990, and it’s the first time that Italy emerged victorious since they returned to the competition in 2014.

France finished in 2nd place, while Switzerland – who won the jury vote – finished in 3rd place.  Iceland – who didn’t actually perform live on the night owing to being in quarantine – finished 4th, Ukraine’s folk-electro hit finished 5th, while Finland’s rock anthem finished in 6th.

At the other end of the table, the United Kingdom finished with the much-dreaded null points, while Germany, Spain, and hosts the Netherlands propped up the rest of the table.
