At a time when the Covid-19 pandemic has altered drastically the way we live and communicate, it falls to each individual society to discover the way forward. Malta has always been one of the most ambitious and innovative countries in the European Union and we must again be at the forefront of embracing new technologies which will help usher in a digital revolution and transformation.

I have always been a firm believer that the digital sector, along with a good grasp of ICT skills, can provide a good foundation and set of tools for all Maltese, across the different generations, including children, who will in the future work in the digital sector and older citizens, who can feel connected with their families and the rest of the world.

Through my involvement of many years in the ICT training business and the digital sector I have seen how embracing new opportunities, which technology can offer, can change lives for the better. The current pandemic may create a sense of instability and insecurity when one looks at the coming years, but I believe we must be positive and look at the opportunities that can emerge.

It is no secret that the world was already changing prior to Covid-19; most countries including Malta have been embracing digital technologies to communicate. This past year has accelerated the process and we are beginning to understand how the world that emerges can be more inclusive and more equal than the world we left behind.

The digital and technological revolution is on our doorstep and we must embrace fully the opportunities it offers. Even though Malta has been considered a leader when it comes to the sector of digital innovation, this esteem can be easily lost if we fail to fully immerse ourselves and let other countries lead on new initiatives.

As a country we must work to ensure that we invest in the capabilities that the Maltese society already has. Educational institutions like the University of Malta and MCAST have a big part to play to ensure that each one of us can be involved in this digital revolution. By investing in ourselves, as a country, we will have a capable and knowledgeable workforce that can be ready to lead the change and ensure that the best jobs are taken up by the Maltese, rather than having to import foreign workers because we do not have the required expertise.

To involve everyone in this revolution, we must provide an equal playing field for all, meaning that we should all have good access to the internet and any digital service that is created. We all have different capabilities but by including the society as a whole in this revolution, each individual’s digital literacy will improve, creating a scenario where we have the required skills needed in all circumstances.

Involving everyone does not mean that we will all have the same understanding and level of ability in ICT skills, but we must have a situation where all generations feel comfortable in using digital devices and technologies. Even for our older citizens, the digital world must become a friend to use rather than something to be hesitant about.

It is my dream to see that no one is left behind, no young person held back because they do not have the skills required to embrace the coming digital revolution. That is why I am committed in ensuring that we improve our level of digital education so that all Maltese, especially the younger generation, can succeed and get the high paid quality jobs that an innovative digital Malta can offer.
