A man in Spain has been jailed for 15 years after killing his mother and eating her remains, international media report.

Alberto Sanchez Gomez, who is 28 years old, was arrested in 2019 after police found body parts around his mother’s home, some of which were in plastic containers.

He was sentenced to 15 years for the murder and a further five months for the desecration of a corpse as the court rejected his arguments that he was experience a psychotic episode at the time of the murder.

He was also ordered to pay €60,000 to his brother as compensation.

The court heard how Sanchez had strangled his mother, Maria Soledad Gomez who was in her 60s, in an argument.

He then dismembered and ate parts of her body over the following two weeks, also feeding some of the parts to his dog.

Police discovered the body parts in February 2019 in eastern Madrid after a friend raised concerns about the woman’s welfare.
