Balzan’s mayor Ian Spiteri has stepped down from his post for personal reasons.
Spiteri announced the news on his personal profile on Friday morning, saying that he was very sad to share the news.
He will be stepping down both as mayor and as councillor.
“It was a really tough but necessary decision, and one which was based on purely personal reasons and not political”, he said.
He said that they were six tough but greatly satisfying years and that he had given everything he could, although he said that he wished to do more but was limited since he was part of just a local council.
Spiteri was first elected as mayor of PN stronghold Balzan in 2015 with 528 first count votes, before being re-elected comfortably in 2019 with 787 first count votes.
Angelo Micallef will take Spiteri's place as Balzan mayor.
His resignation will open the way for a casual election, with Andre Grech and Edward Calleja the only two PN candidates who weren’t elected in 2019.
