Neil Agius will be arriving in Xlendi, Gozo between 8 and 9pm today, as he attempts to break a world swimming record.

Neil Agius hit the 100 kilometre mark earlier on Wednesday. His team said he was well on his way to breaking the maritime world record for the longest continuous, unassisted, current-neutral swim along a single segment, which currently stands at 124.4km.

Agius set off from the island of Linosa on Monday evening, and has been swimming on the 130km journey to Malta since – through two nights where the wind and current was mostly against him.

As of 8:15am, his pace had increased from 2.5km per hour to 3.2km per hour, with the wind and current finally coming in his favour.

Agius is partaking in this challenge to raise awareness on plastic waste in the sea, with the NGO he founded, Wave of Change, asking people to pick up six pieces of plastic, and nominating more people to do so.

Agius is swimming to raise awareness of plastic waste in the sea and is asking people to support him by getting involved in the 'Double the Wave' challenge.

This can be done by:

·        picking up six pieces of plastic;

·        posting a video of yourself on social media doing six repetitions of your favourite exercise with the pieces of plastic in the video;

·        Use #doublethewave and tag Wave Of Change Malta;

·        Tag and nominate six people.
