Alexandra Mamo becomes first female Deputy Police Commissioner

Thursday, 1 July 2021, 17:26 Last update: about 4 years ago

Alexandra Mamo has become Malta's first female deputy police commissioner.

Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri and Police Commissioner Angelo Gafa on Thursday announced that two new deputy police commissioners were appointed. The second is Ramon Mercieca.

Mamo has served in the Malta Police Force for over 31 years and was, until now, an assistant commissioner leading the Financial Crimes Investigation Department. She had taken over the financial crimes unit from Ian Abdilla last year, in what was one of the first changes made by Gafa when he became police commissioner. Under her leadership, several high-profile individuals have been investigated over financial crimes, which resulted in a number of prosecutions.

Mercieca was, prior to this appointment, an assistant police commissioner.

Deputy Commissioner Alexandra Mamo will be responsible for specialised investigations and technical support, while Deputy Commissioner Ramon Mercieca will be responsible for districts, field and operational support.
