Bus driver to be disciplined after ‘dismissive’ treatment of person on wheelchair

Tuesday, 6 July 2021, 18:02 Last update: about 4 years ago

A bus driver is to be called in for disciplining by Malta Public Transport after a customer using a wheelchair complained about what he described as “dismissive and discriminatory action”.

The customer expressed his frustration on the social media after the incident which occurred last Sunday at 11am on Route 62 at the Marsa park and ride (direction Valletta).

The “driver unilaterally refused to allow me to get on the bus, even though the bus was empty. He was very rude, ending up closing the bus door in my face while I was asking him the reason for his decision,” the man wrote on Facebook.

The customer believes that he was treated this way because he uses a wheelchair.

“You can imagine how upset I was,” he wrote, given the hot day and his condition.

What made it worse was that the customer complained that he wrote to Malta Public Transport to complain and that today, three days later, he had not received an acknowledgment. He said he was left with no option but to expose the incident on the social media.

Contacted by The Malta Independent, the MPT confirmed the incident, which was captured on CCTV.

"The incident has been investigated by our health and safety team including viewing the CCTV on board our buses, and the passenger has been informed accordingly," MPT told The Malta Independent.

"All public transport buses are accessible to wheelchairs and the company is committed to provide a service to all, without discrimination.

"We would like to extend an apology to this passenger and assure him that the necessary internal action including training will be taken to ensure that this does not happen again."
