Wied Fulija has been converted from a dumping site to an open space for families, Prime Minister Robert Abela said.
Two billion kilogrammes of waste were removed from this valley at Zurrieq as part of a €4.5 million project which also included the planting of 43,000 trees and bushes.
At the launch, Abela said that one of the most picturesque areas in Malta had ended up beneath piles of debris and waste. This has now been cleared and the area has been rehabilitated for the enjoyment of families.
The government, Abela added, is working hard to find the right balance between the economy and the environment.
Environment Minister Aaron Farrugia said that the Wied Fulija project is creating a new ecosystem which will contribute to cleaner air and improving biodiversity. The area is expected to attract many visitors who enjoy the countryside with a view of the sea and the island of Filfla.
Parliamentary Secretary Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi said that the area has been converted from one of neglect to one that will attract thousands of visitors.
