Monday, 19 July 2021, 09:38 Last update: about 4 years ago

Over 2,400 people received their Covid-19 vaccine at the mobile unit on Monday, the first day that such a service is being provided.

The surge in the number of cases must have pushed unvaccinated people to get the jab.

Malta has seen a rapid surge in the number of cases over the past few days, with the number of active cases shooting up to more than 1,800.

The mobile was at the Mosta technopark. No appointment is necessary.

People were lining up in a long queue outside the mobile unit, keeping a two-metre distance as per required protocol.

It was open between 9am and noon.

Health Minister Chris Fearne announced later in the day that 2,461 had taken the jab.

With 81 per cent of the population vaccinated, Malta has the highest per capita rate in the world.

The mobile unit will be in Zejtun on Wednesday, St Julian's on Friday, and in front of Parliament in Valletta on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday next week.
