Four former Speakers of the House of Representatives have turned down an invitation by the current Speaker Anglu Farrugia to take part in a symposium he will be organising next week.
Farrugia will be holding a symposium on the 100th anniversary of the setting up of the Maltese Parliament.
In a letter, Alfred Bonnici, Lawrence Gonzi, Anton Tabone and Louis Galea said they will not be taking part.
The decision to refuse was taken because “in the current circumstances… we do not feel it is opportune that Parliament dedicates its time for a ceremony like this when the country is facing more pressing and urgent matters”.
They suggested that the ceremony is postponed to a later date.
