A prisoner who had attempted suicide days ago has died in hospital.
Colin Galea died at Mater Dei on Tuesday, some of his family members wrote on Facebook.
Galea becomes the 13th prisoner to have passed away in the last three years.
The 30-year-old was found in his cell on 8 August and was taken to the intensive care unit at Mater Dei Hospital.
The incident had led to an inquiry being launched, and a board was set up to evaluate prison procedures. Among other things, the board will scrutinise the procedures at the prison in their assessment of the mental and physical wellbeing of the inmates who would have just entered prison, and study the regulations imposed by the Correctional Services Agency.
In a statement, the PN expressed its anger at another youth dying while being rehavbilitated at the Corradino Correctional Facility.
The PN urged the need for prison reform that looks at the life, dignity and rights of prisoners while respecting its role as a rehabilitation facility.
The PN said that Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri as well as the prison administration have lost all credibility to assure that this takes place.
“Another inquiry will not solve the problem, and that is why Prime Minister Robert Abela needs to understand that the prison is not performing its function, and that is why the present leadership at the prison must be immediately removed.”
