The Maltese Islands are expected to experience winds reaching up to Force 7 on Wednesday, with the sea expected to become rough in several areas.

Bathers are being advised to avoid swimming at beaches situated along the affected coastline.

The Maltese Islands Weather and The Weather Page Malta Facebook pages said that an area of low pressure traversing the central Mediterranean over the next couple of days will generate a strong westerly air flow across the central Mediterranean.

The West to West Northwest wind will increase gradually during the day on Tuesday and could gust up to Force 7 at peak times from late Tuesday to early Thursday.

The Maltese Islands Weather page advised people with boats moored in the affected areas (see photo) to bring their vessels ashore by Tuesday evening.

“The sea will be rough at times, and therefore, swimming and diving are not advised. The situation does not merit any special warning, but since many take the sea for granted in the summer months, we have decided to warn you ahead,” the page administrators said.

The Weather Page Malta said people should not swim in areas like Paradise Bay, Ċirkewwa, Armier, Sliema, Golden Bay, Għajn Tuffieħa (Riviera Bay), Ġnejna Bay, Anchor Bay, Marsalforn, Dwejra, Xlendi, Ramla Bay, Ċirkewwa and Comino. It warned that the sea might become moderate to rough.

Meanwhile, the Met Office says that the wind could reach Force 6 on Wednesday.

Temperatures will remain hot, with a highs of 32 degrees Celsius on Wednesday and 31 on Thursday.
