Animal Welfare Commissioner investigating case of dogs put down by government unit

The Office of the Animal Welfare Commissioner is currently investigating the cases of euthanasia of dogs by Animal Welfare Directorate, a Facebook post by the Commissioner read.

This follows the news that three pitbulls - Mason, Archie and Xena - were put down by the Anumal Welfare Directorate recently.

"The Office of the Commissioner is not in any way consulted beforehand in such cases as the law does not require the Animal Welfare Directorate to involve the Commissioner's Office in any way. "

"The law CAP439 (43) only stipulates that '...aggressive animals shall not be kept in stock and may be slaughtered or culled if this is deemed to be necessary or expedient by the Director for Veterinary Services or Director for Animal Welfare.' Members of the public wishing to contribute to the investigation are requested to contact The Office of the Commissioner on [email protected]. Once concluded, the report will be made available to the public."
