Sewage outflow in Qammieh area has gone ‘from bad to worse’ – Ivan Castillo

Friday, 20 August 2021, 15:43 Last update: about 4 years ago

Mellieħa Councillor and PN Candidate Ivan Castillo has taken to Facebook over his frustration regarding the issue of the sewage treatment plant in Qammieh, saying that the situation has gone "from bad to worse."

In a video posted on Facebook by Castillo, outflow of sewage surfacing the sea can be seen. The video was taken around two days ago.

Castillo urged the government once again to take heed of the situation "as no one is winning here. Our tourist product depends on the cleanliness of our seas. This is unsafe and a definite health issue."

Time and time again, Castillo has shed light on this ongoing issue in the hopes of resolving the problem.

"We cannot afford to continue to drown the hospitality sector even more than it already has been."

"A year ago, I made a post urging the government to take stock of the issue of the sewage treatment plant in Marfa, so that it has the capacity to treat all drainage and no longer pumps it into the sea," Castillo said.

He expressed his disappointment saying, "it is sad that such a plant was built to ensure that all the drainage in the North of Malta is to be treated and in return given to the farmers, as New Water to be used to grow their crops has been neglected for eight years."

"It is clear that the government had no vision when they decided to explode the development on the island and failed to think about the overall effects and upgrading of this plant.

We have drainage seeping in our streets in Bugibba and Qawra!," Castillo wrote.

The area being shown in the video is just around the corner of the largest and most populated sandy beach on the island. A beach which caters for hundreds of jobs and hundreds of thousands in investment.

"In a time when due to climate change, we need as much water as we can produce, we seem to have continued to do nothing."

Castillo remarked that the spokesperson for WSC stated that they are "committed to continue supplying new water and expand the distribution network to serve the farming and agricultural community and industry."

He concluded his post by saying "it is clear much more needs to be done."
