‘Angelo Gafa is dragging his feet’ on prosecuting Malta's 'big fish' – Repubblika

Monday, 23 August 2021, 09:57 Last update: about 4 years ago

Police Commissioner Angelo Gafa is dragging his feet on charging people in court over several scandals which have rocked the country, Repubblika President Robert Aquilina said on Monday.

In a press conference outside the Police headquarters in Floriana, Aquilina lamented how nobody has been charged by the police - leading him to say that Gafa, who has held his tenure for just over a year now, was much like his predecessor Lawrence Cutajar in his inaction.

Aquilina noted that no action has been taken on issues such as the country's FATF grey listing and the several corruption scandals which have rocked the country in recent years.

Amongst the people and cases mentioned by Aquilina were those of John Dalli, where he said that Gafa had recommended that Dalli be charged in court, and of Pilatus Bank, which Gafa had led point on but where prosecutions have not come.

Aquilina queried how Gafa doesn't have anything in hand to charge former government Minister Konrad Mizzi with attempted money laundering, or to charge former MFSA CEO Joseph Cuschieri and former MGA CEO Heathcliff Farrugia with trading in influence.

He mentioned the case concerning former OPM chief of staff Keith Schembri, but added that these charges did not relate to his political work. In addition, he said that Schembri was charged because of the magisterial inquiry rather than the police proactively moving forward. He said that Gafa had been "forced" to charge Schembri by the courts.

"He hasn't done anything about the obscenities which Joseph Muscat carried out. Gafa left him at liberty to travel round the world and give interviews", he said.

He said that Gafa had done nothing about Yorgen Fenech and his alleged corruption through the secret company 17 Black, and neither had anything been done about people who allegedly plotted and carried out illegalities with Fenech.

Amongst those, Aquilina claimed, was a certain Anthony Farrugia - known as "il-Buddy", who allegedly was complicit with Fenech in the use of bitcoin illegally.

Aquilina said that Gafa didn't even have the courage to tell them why Assistant Commissioner Ian Abdilla had been suspended.

All in all, Aquilina described Gafa as a "disappointment", saying that it seemed like the current Police Commissioner was much like his predecessor Lawrence Cutajar, in that those considered to be "untouchables" are still considered as such.

He said that they expected the prosecution of "big fish" and of accountability from the office of the Police Commissioner, and not to have to return to the depot next month to say that another month had passed without any action being taken.
