As the fourth anniversary of Daphne Caruana Galizia's murder approaches (16 October), NGO Repubblika has announced a series of exhibitions and discussions across various localities, with the main theme being 'Daphne was right'.

Together with Repubblika, Occupy Justice and manueldelia.com will form part of the organisational aspect of these events.

Repubblika President Robert Aquilina said that these yearly activities are "at the centre of our driving force. This year being the fourth anniversary of Daphne Caruana Galizia's assassination has its own significance."

He said that this is the first anniversary after the report of the public enquiry was published. He went on to explain how the public enquiry states four fundamental facts.

"The first fact is that Daphne was assassinated because of her work, the second fact is that parts of the government under Joseph Muscat have a certain amount of responsibility to uphold. The third fact is that certain laws need to be changed or reinterpreted in order to prevent this from happening again. Lastly, the public inquiry stated that Daphne Caruana Galizia exercised an important role within our democracy."

In comments to The Malta Independent, Aquilina said that "this anniversary combined with the publication of the public inquiry has a double significance. The first aspect is the fact that the public enquiry described Daphne Caruana Galizia as a hero and she was assassinated due to her investigative work. The second aspect concerns the fact that after two months, the government has not yet taken any action on the recommendations listed in the report."

Aquilina explained that this anniversary therefore is of utmost importance for Repubblika to push the government to act on these recommendations.

Aquilina said: "I expect the Prime Minister to show a small amount of solidarity with the truth and show respect to the late Daphne Caruana Galizia. He could have done this by simply laying some flowers and a candle on her memorial."

The theme 'Daphne was right' was chosen after the recent revelations brought about by Daphne Caruana Galizia's writing. "Although Daphne Caruana Galizia was right in what she wrote, a feeling of impunity still surrounds us."

Throughout the summer Repubblika put pressure on Police Commissioner Angelo Gafa. Aquilina said that "we wanted to see change and change came thanks to the pressure we put as an NGO."

Aquilina was referring to three separate cases. The case of Ian Abdilla, Pilatus bank and John Dalli.

This is just the tip of the iceberg, Repubblika said, "but inspired by Daphne Caruana Galizia's work, we are determined to continue fighting to end impunity in Malta."

As of today till the 16 October, the localities of Rabat Gozo, Rabat Malta, Hal-Qormi, Sliema and Valletta would be the backdrops to the Daphne Caruana Galizia exhibition.

These activities would be a couple of days long and at the end of each activity, a discussion would be held with topics ranging from the future of journalism after Daphne to lessons for Malta's democracy.

On the date of the anniversary, Repubblika would see three separate events, one at Bidnijja at 3 p.m, another event being a mass in remembrance of Daphne Caruana Galizia's assassination and finally a vigil in front of court at 7:30 p.m.

In his closing statement, Aquilina said that "The time would come for Daphne to be given the proper send off she deserves."
