Fourth anniversary of Daphne Caruana Galizia assassination marked at Bidnija

Saturday, 16 October 2021, 15:39 Last update: about 4 years ago

The fourth anniversary of the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia is being commemorated today.

The investigative journalist was killed in a car bomb outside her home in Bidnija on 16 October, 2017.

Her murder had triggered a political crisis which, two years later, had led to the resignation of former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat.

It also led to a wave of protests and the resignations of other public officers, including former Police Commissioner Lawrence Cutajar and Attorney General Peter Grech.

Three men have been charged with the murder, with one of them, Vince Muscat, admitting to the crime and being sentenced to 15 years in jail.

The other two, brothers George and Alfred Degiorgio, are awaiting trial.

Businessman Yorgen Fenech has been charged with being a mastermind behind the murder.

Civil society group Repubblika is holding a commemoration on the site of the killing, while a vigil in front of the Law Courts is set for this evening.
