‘We would provide government all the support it needs to terminate the hospitals deal’ – Delia

PN MP Adrian Delia said that the PN would give the government all the support it needs to terminate the hospitals concession agreement.

Stewards Healthcare was transferred the concession to run the three hospitals - Gozo General hospital, St. Lukes and Karin Grech from Vitals Global Healthcare a few years ago. In 2018 Delia, then the opposition leader, took the government to court claiming that the deal with VGH was fraudulent and should be terminated immediately. The PN argues that the hospitals should be returned to the public.

Speaking in Parliament, Delia said that "we would give all the possible help the government needs to terminate this deal and we will make sure that the money is spent for the benefit of the people," Delia said.

Delia also brought to the attention of parliament that disgraced former Minister Konrad Mizzi had added a clause to the deal secretly which results in a 100 million euro pay-out to Stewards Healthcare if the government was to terminate the deal.

Parliament was discussing the budget allocated to the health ministry.

Nationalist Party MP Mario Galea spoke of his personal mental health experiences.

Galea opened up about his personal experience by stating that "the worst thing about depression is that people who do not have it, just don't get it."

Throughout his life, Galea said that he battled depression and suicidal thoughts. He tackled these difficulties by opening up to professional help stating that "there were moments when I wanted to commit suicide, but I realised that I needed help."

While saying that he is glad he did not follow through with his thoughts, Galea expressed concern over the effects that the pandemic had on mental health services everywhere. "Depression is a chemical imbalance in the brain that could affect anyone. The fact that during the pandemic, when mental health services were needed the most, this service was disrupted, is worrying."

Galea called for the emergency department in Mater Dei to include a crisis intervention unit to prevent drastic action being taken during moments of depression.

He stated in his closing statement that "there is no health without mental health." During parliamentary proceedings, Health Minister Chris Fearne invited Galea to attend the opening of the new crisis intervention unit which would treat patients at home.
