Sewage continues to seep into St Paul’s Bay schoolyard, despite repair efforts

Monday, 8 November 2021, 13:02 Last update: about 4 years ago

Sewage was still seeping out on a street and into a nearby schoolyard on Monday morning, despite efforts by government works to repair the damage.

The issue was flagged on Facebook by PN MP Robert Cutajar, who said that the sewage was reaching the yard of the St Paul’s Bay primary school.

The Water Services Corporation later said it had been carrying out repair works in the area throughout the week, but an “incident” on Sunday saw sewage spill out of a drainage pipe.

It said that works to stop the outflow were being carried out while the area was being cleaned and disinfected. It apologised for the inconvenience caused.

Cutajar said on Sunday he had spoken to Education Minister Justyne Caruana and brought the case to her attention. The minister assured him that the health and safety of the students would be given priority, he said.

But on Monday, Cutajar posted new videos which show that sewage was still flowing onto the street. He told this newsroom that, for the time being, students were not being allowed out in the yard.

Cutajar said the situation was unacceptable and called for immediate action to be taken.

In another statement on Monday, the WSC said it is carrying out “intensive” works to replace the principal mains.

It said the area forms part of its plan to upgrade the infrastructure due to an increase in demand. The works will cater for present and future demand, it said.
