Today 11 November marks 103 years since the effective end of what is known today as World War 1.

As another year is remembered, Malta together with other countries organised an event to commemorate the traditional Armistice Day.

During the ceremony guests were invited to remember the lives lost during this war. As part of the tradition, which was first started by King George V in 1919, a two-minute silence was held at exactly 11am, marking the time at which the Allied powers signed a truce with Germany at Compiegne, France.

During the First World War, Malta had earned the name ‘The nurse of the Mediterranean’, as more than 100,000 wounded soldiers from different countries in the Commonwealth were treated in Maltese hospitals.

During the ceremony it was remarked that the continuation of excluding the public from the ceremony will sadly have to take place even this year, as Covid restrictions lay still.
