Mizzi not on PL election candidate list, but party won’t say if he’s still a member

The Labour Party’s list of candidates for the general election does not include Konrad Mizzi, but the Party avoided saying whether the MP is still a member.

In June 2020, Mizzi was expelled from the PL’s Parliamentary Group after a decision was taken by the group itself and the PL Executive Committee. It was a near unanimous decision, as 71 of the 73 attendees voted for him to no longer be part of the Parliamentary Group, while there was one abstention and one vote against. Former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat (an MP at the time) had not attended the meeting.

Mizzi at the time had been under fire after the Montenegro scandal revelations, which was the latest in a string of scandals including the Panama Papers, Electrogas and the privatisation of three public hospitals.

Prime Minister Robert Abela had asked Mizzi to resign from the Parliamentary Group, but the former energy minister said he did not agree, which led to the holding of the meeting with Mizzi being voted out of the Parliamentary Group. Abela had said at the time that “the decision on Konrad Mizzi was taken because of the implications that there were; that he had connections with the Panama Papers and 17 Black”. Abela had also said that he was not judging Mizzi from a legal aspect, but rather judged his “political position".

Mizzi is currently an independent MP.

While Mizzi no longer forms part of the Parliamentary Group, it was never made clear whether Mizzi is still a member of the Labour Party itself and questions in this regard remain unanswered.

The Malta Independent on Sunday sent a number of questions to the Labour Party, including whether Mizzi is still a member of the party, whether the PL will move to kick him out if he still is and whether the party would accept him as a candidate for the upcoming general election if his name is proposed.

“The Partit Laburista list of candidates for the next election does not include Konrad Mizzi, currently an independent member of parliament,” a Labour Party spokesperson responded.

Recently, Mizzi has been in the headlines again due to the Public Accounts Committee looking into the Auditor General’s report regarding the Electrogas project.

Mizzi had delayed his appearance before the committee for weeks.

The PN had accused the Labour Party of being in cahoots with Mizzi over his reluctance to testify, but Prime Minister Abela had said that government members on the PAC should not, and will not, protect Mizzi and should carry out their work in a neutral manner.

The Malta Independent also asked Mizzi if he intends to contest the general election, however, no response had been received by the time this article went to print.
