A woman died when she was hit by a car on Sunday evening, the police said.

The woman, a 30-year-old Tunisian, was hit by a Mercedes Benz C350 driven by a 42-year-old man of Mellieha, at Xemxija Hill, limits of St Paul's Bay, just after 8pm on Sunday.

The car careened into four other vehicles which were parked on the side of the road.

The woman was cerified dead on site, the police said.

A Tunisian man who was accompanying the woman and the driver were both taken to hospital for treatment. They both suffered slight injuries.

Magistrate Lara Lanfranco is leading an inquiry.

The road was closed off to traffic for several hours.
