390 workers employed with the Correctional Services Agency have submitted a petition through the Disciplined Forces branch of the General Workers Union for the reinstatement Colonel Alex Dalli as director of the prison.

The GWU stated that the workers are grateful and appreciative of the work done by ex-prison director Colonel Alex Dalli.

The petition was signed by the majority of all wardens employed at the Corradino Correctional Facilities and they said that they wanted to publicly speak about the progress which was achieved under Dalli’s command.

“The Correctional Services Agency now has structures in place which introduced order and enough resources for wardens to work effectively. This also included the work done by the wardens to help rehabilitate prisoners,” the GWU and prison workers said.

The statement also took aim at what they described as the antiquated mentality which had reigned in prison for years. This was said with reference to the drug and violence mentality which Dalli claims to have removed during his three years as director.

“Without the structures which were put in place by Dalli, prisoners and their families were suffering in silence and intimidation and a desperate chance in mentality was needed.”

The document presented claims that an “unprecedented” amount of changes were introduced by Dalli. The introduction of the first ever medical centre at the correctional facility, works on abandoned prison cells and the employment of doctors, psychologists, dentists and nurses were all introduced under Dalli’s leadership, they said.

The GWU claims to be preoccupied with working with the new administration chosen to lead the correctional facility in order to “build on the good that has occurred in the recent years and not fall back on old habits.”

A pledge was made by prison wardens to do their part to continue running the correctional facility as smoothly as possible. “We also encourage everyone who possesses social influence on the community to help appreciate the work done. Sensationalism and non-factual comments are instigated by those who do not want order and discipline within these walls.”
