Moments of truth

The Labour MEPs and corps staff like Cyrus Engerer have spent at least the last 8 years on a character assassination of MEPs Robert Metsola and David Casa, from the EPP party.  The constant enmity was clear to all and the accusations launched against Metsola and Casa were targeted to discredit them both.

All the while, both of them were disregarding their own stress and injury, for the sake of doing their best for Malta and its interests both as a member of the European Union and for its good name and prosperity.

All of this whilst EU Commissioner John Dalli was facing accusations of impropriety on a never heard before level.  Also whilst Labour MP and MEP Rosianne Cutajar was having to answer for her conduct both before The Council of Europe on whether she should be sanctioned for possible ethical breaches, saying it needs further information from Malta's parliament and to the Commissioner of Standards in Malta.

Cyrus Engerer was in the spotlight as well for various lapses in his own conduct.

All of which was a but a shadow of the opprobrium towards ex-Prime Minister Joseph Muscat who had all his aspirations and ambitions for notoriety at the European Union thwarted by his very own disgraceful exit from Malta’s top political job.

But this week Prime Minister Robert Abela had to eat humble pie and condescendingly say he was backing Roberta Metsola’s candidacy for the position of President of the EU Parliament.

Try as he might to circumvent the approval, he failed.  The EPP went on to nominate Metsola as their candidate.

Anybody who is left with some pride for their country was vindicated by this nomination and the country owes gratitude to Roberta for her hard and honest work and well - merited nomination.  Her achievements have been significant in fighting for a democratic EU.  She is also greatly supported by her colleague David Casa who will be lobbying for her.

The false accusations that had been made against the 2 Nationalist MEPs have been flung back in the face of those empty-headed pigeons, who by saying that they defend Malta at any time, against any injustice or whatever highly criticized policy, have exposed their empty arguments and their house of cards is falling into a pile.

What amazes is how the Labour benches and publicity machines continue to find the energy to constantly fight and manipulate the reality confronting them.  Granted, they can forsake their day job in order to ensure the crap is kept warm.

But the disregard for common decency is something that is the hallmark of the entire Labour entourage.  The litany of lies and constant persecution of the truth is unravelling before them.  Try as he might, speaker Anglu Farrugia fools nobody but his parrot.

At one time we used to say thank goodness the Courts are still there.  More common now is for those under fire to say thank God for Mater Dei.  And for Anglu Farrugia.  Alex Dalli also is handy and Angelo Gafa’ is climbing up the ladder too.

This is the kind of element Labour sinks into.  The muck, the spoils of corruption and the engineering of an organization of power, fear and greed.

As the rains poured down this week, the real face of Malta and Gozo is made bare for all to see what all the uncontrolled development has led to.  Videos uploaded to the social media show the floods over most of the heavy traffic roads.  Others show veritable rivers on locations where the building of villas is intended.  We have already seen how much water is captured in the Marsalforn valley.  But no rejection has been made for the widening of this road, the need for which is totally fabricated.  We have watched alarming videos of the drastic amounts of water coming down to Xlendi.  It is not unlikely to imagine that one day there will be an avalanche of concrete sliding into the bay.

Instead of coming to account and admitting that much harm has been wreaked onto our island both in terms of reputation and physically, Abela and his organization dig in their heels, raise their head and blabber about support and dedication to Malta.

That kind of dedication and interest is the equivalent of the Artful Dodger who sends out his child thieves to pick pocket and then stands by them when confronted by the police.  It is an outfit and we do not need to look far for the characters of Dickens’ Oliver Twist to realize the gravity of the compromised ethic and the depravity of it all that surrounds us.

As time passes and facts are uncovered, Abela and the members of the sordid party, along with their media and hand-picked appointees to positions of power and responsibility for Malta and Gozo’s good order and well-being, are becoming more and more isolated and subject to the consequences of their actions.  Electrogas, Steward Hospitals, Pilatus bank, shady conglomerates, grey-listing by the FATF, the report on the Daphne Caruana Galizia inquiry, the lack of police charges on well-documented cases, the huge debt and deficit, the management of the prison and the take-over of the state media.  The recent repetition of the lack of enforcement of COVID rule and regulations, especially by the highest of politicians is a disgrace and will only serve to make people nervous again and remind them of the huge difficulties we faced in Summer 2020.

People are able to judge and feel for themselves the way we have let ourselves down as a country and as a people.  It is in instances like this, where we have a capable, loyal and dedicated Metsola to restore our reputation and to show admirable courage, that we are reminded that experience, excellent service and good, moral character still resides amongst the people of Malta.

We augur that she will find all the support and strength to achieve this remarkable opportunity to serve her country and the EU.  She has a family to which she is also dedicated and is a wonderful example of self-less ambition.

As we plod on trough the muck of our times, here on our concrete and clay, we look for that kind of energy, intelligence and experience that can rise above the rest and draw the people behind them.  This is a battle not for an electoral victory.  It is not a doubtful attempt to succeed.  It is a crucial endeavor, a vocation and requires a united effort.

Look around and see the culmination of the past 8 years.  Smell the stench of corruption.  Check your bills and see where your children are.  Have they been forgotten in your passionate drive to economic and self- empowerment?  What does the future hold for them and were all the dubious civil liberties a good example of the best you can offer to them?

Caught in the trap, we become numb and discouraged.  We listen occasionally, we dare to hope sometimes but the need for a really credible alternative is growing louder by the day.  For now, though, we can take some comfort that there exists a way to do it.
