Infrastructure Malta will be using new landing facilities in Cospicua for ferry passengers during the first half of 2022.

The facilities form part of a €5 million project partially financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), and aim to introduce safer infrastructure for passengers using ferry service between Cospicua, Sliema and Valletta.

In his comments, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure, and Capital Projects Ian Borg said that this new project ensures that the budget’s promise to introduce new methods of transportation and improve current ones is kept.

Parliamentary Secretary for EU Funds Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi said that it is one of Infrastructure Malta’s objectives to assist in creating new methods of transportation. He mentioned that several bridges have already been completed to facilitate travel by bicycles, such as the one found at MCAST and Blata l-Bajda.

The first phase of the Cospicua landing site was completed earlier this year.

In its final phase of this project, Infrastructure Malta is completing a new quay that includes sheltered waiting room areas, ticket booths, and other amenities to increase safety and accessibility for its passengers.

Apart from the mentioned project, Infrastructure Malta is also in its final stages of completing a similar ferry quay found in the Ferries area of Sliema with funds from this European Union project. This quay which is estimated to be completed by 2022, will also be equipped with facilities like the ones in Cospicua.

Infrastructure Malta is also planning to upgrade the existing ferry landing site at the Marsamxett side in Valletta.

After the conference, the media present asked for updates regarding the Supreme travel case after a court of law established that the complaint by the harbour ferry operator is to be heard and taken into consideration before the Public Contracts Review Board.

In responding to the question, Minister Borg said that he has no other information from the authorities. He added that the media should seek information from the concerned authority as the Ministry does not interfere in these aspects.
