In 2019, now two and a half years ago, just after my election as an MEP, it was still uncertain how my new job would turn out. I was elected to the European Parliament on the promise that I would always stand up for Malta and its people, and I believe I have carried this out to the best of my ability.

At the same time, as part of The Socialists And Democrats Group, it is our mission to push forward the idea of a progressive and social Europe, where no one is left behind and is given the opportunities to succeed in life.

From a health crisis that has transformed our lives, to Brexit, the urgent need to address the climate emergency and the ongoing digital transition, these past years have been a true struggle. Yet what we have seen emerge is the clear belief from many Europeans that we need to live in a union where social justice is a true priority. It has been argued that social democracy is dead, but the truth is that the implementation of a more Social Europe is needed more than ever before.

It is this vision that I have worked in earnest to promote during my time as an MEP and it was a huge honour to see this recognised this week as I was elected one of 9 Vice-Presidents of the Socialists and Democrats, being given a very strong mandate with 85% of our political group voting for my candidature.

I thank all my colleagues who gave me their support and I promise that I will work even harder to ensure that our political aims are implemented. Delivering better conditions for workers, better protection of our consumers, better quality of life for our citizens, equal opportunities and social protection for all, fair digital and green transitions that leave no one behind, the implementation of the European Social Pillar and the Recovery and Resilience Plans hinge on our unity, our effort to push forward new progressive policies, the effectiveness and consistency of our priorities, and adherence to our values. We have a duty to work together to make a lasting difference.

The Socialists and Democrats are a political group which houses different cultures and perspectives, but our progressive agenda unites us for Europe's better future. Big and small countries, east and west, south, and north of Europe, can work together in solidarity and willingness to take joint responsibility and build bridges for a healthier, greener, fairer, more resilient, and sustainable Europe that leaves no one behind. Even the fact that the S&D has elected a Vice-President from the smallest delegation in the group shows the value and the vision that each person can bring forward to better people’s lives.

We have an opportunity in the second half of our mandate to push forward our social agenda and I commit to continue working hard towards our political priorities and in ensuring that Europe is back on the road to recovery, and that the vision of Social Europe emerges more robust from this crisis. The Group of Socialists and Democrats are united by a progressive agenda, solidarity, and a joint responsibility for a better future for Europe.

While my workload and effort in our political family will increase, I will never forget the first promise I have made to myself and those that elected me, that I will continue to always stand firm and do my best to work for Malta and its values. I now look forward to translating the trust I have been given with more hard work for the benefit of the S&D Group and all European citizens.
