Covid-19: Number of active cases, people in hospital up again; total cases so far is 55,000

The number of active Covid-19 cases as well as the number of people in hospital with the virus has shot up again, figures released by the health authorities on Monday show.

New cases registered total 812, but with only 240 patients recovering the number of active cases has climbed steadily again, going up to a record of 13,260.

It is the 12th consecutive day that the number of active cases has gone up.

Data issued by the Superintendence of Public Health shows that 6,358 swab tests were carried out on the previous day, equating to a positivity rate of 12.77%. The positivity rate is quite a bit lower than the 16 to 17% positivity rate that was characterising the Christmas period.

No deaths were recorded, which leaves the number of victims registered so far to 479.

The number of people in hospital with the virus has climbed from the 110 on Sunday to 122 on Monday, with seven in intensive care, the same as on Sunday.

The health authorities saud 1,075,996 vaccination doses have been administered, of which 227,648 were booster doses.

Malta has had 55,000 cases of the virus so far. 40,912 of those have recovered.
