Malta has highest Covid booster rate and lowest hospitalisation rate in Europe – Fearne

Malta currently has the highest rate of Covid-19 boosters administered in Europe, and subsequently the lowest number of Covid-19 patients in hospital in the continent as well, Health Minister Chris Fearne said on Monday.

Quoting a dataset from the website Our World in Data, Fearne used the data to reiterate that the vaccine boosters work as intended and keep people from getting seriously ill from Covid-19.

Over half of Malta’s population has received a Covid-19 booster dose ahead of new regulations placing more emphasis on them coming into force on January 17.

Up till Saturday in fact, 273,692 people had received a booster dose of the vaccine, with Malta having administered 1,128,125 doses of the vaccine in total.

115 patients were receiving treatment at Mater Dei Hospital on Sunday, with seven of those being in intensive care.

The bulk of the 115 patients are not in hospital specifically because of Covid-19, but are there because they entered hospital for another reason and tested positive after following standard practice and taking a swab test there.
