The Malta Union of Teachers has a filed a police report over comments which they allege amount to hate speech and incitement of violence against particular educators.

In a statement, the MUT referred to Facebook comments written under a news article.

The union called for the protection of the educators affected by the comments and, while not reproducing them publicly in order not to continue damaging the individuals affected, passed on screenshots of the comments to the police.

The MUT said that it is frequently attacked on social media, particularly when it defends educators’ rights and that thus far police have taken no action against this.

However, they said, hate speech and incitement of violence cannot be tolerated and any such comments reported to it by its members will be referred to the police.
