An office in Sa Maison former Prime Minister’s Joseph Muscat’s is using made part of the severance package given to him following his resignation as prime minister in January 2020, Prime Minister Robert Abela confirmed on Thursday.

Following questions from journalists at a press conference today, Abela evaded giving out further details about the severance package, saying that details had already been given.

The office was put under a spotlight following the police home raid in Muscat’s private residence in Burmarrad.

MaltaToday reported that a search was also made at this office, as part of a corruption probe into the Vitals Global Healthcare hospitals deal.

Muscat was not surprised at the investigation and said he was even aware of the home raid beforehand.

The severance package granted to Muscat was worth €120,000, which included the lease of this office, Abela said.

The PM’s office has repeatedly avoided giving out information about details of the severance package. Times of Malta had reportedly filed a freedom of information request regarding the package, shortly after Muscat’s resignation. The PM’s office merely remarked that the same scheme was given to former members of cabinet.

PN MEP David Casa reacted to Abela’s confirmation, saying that whoever resigned in disgrace usually sought a rock to hide under, claiming that Abela was forced by Muscat to grant him an office from taxpayers’ money.
