A man was grievously injured in a hit and run in Balzan early on Thursday morning.

Police said in a statement that the incident happened at around 6am on Thursday in Triq il-Wied in Balzan.

District police investigations found that the man had been injured after he was hit by a car, which then left the scene.

The man was taken to Mater Dei Hospital where he was certified as suffering from grievous injuries.

A search is now underway for police to find the vehicle which allegedly hit the man.

Duty magistrate Claire Stafrace Zammit is leading a magisterial inquiry.
