Siblings fined by court over fight on who was to read at mother’s funeral

Saturday, 5 February 2022, 08:31 Last update: about 3 years ago

Two siblings were each fined €50 by a court after being found guilty of breaching the peace when they fought on a church parvis on who was to read during their mother’s funeral mass.

The case took place four years ago when three siblings came to blows outside the Guardamangia parish church.

One of the siblings ended up injured in the leg and missed the funeral as hospital treatment was needed. The police charged the other two.

The argument started when the priest who was to say Mass asked who was going to read from the Bible during the funeral.

The alleged victim said that his wife and their daughter were going to, with the other siblings objecting to this because they wanted other relatives.

At the time, the family was waiting outside the church for another Mass to end before the funeral was to take place.

Magistrate Claire Stafrace Zammit ruled that there were conflicting versions on how the incident developed. She acquitted the two siblings of causing injuries to the third but found them guilty of breaching public peace, fining them €50 each.
